Quick Start
This guide is for an assembled RIG-Arm. If you are building from parts, read 03-Replication-Guide first.
1. Before Power-On
Before powering on, do a quick inspection:
- Rotate each arm joint by hand and confirm it moves smoothly, without binding or interference.
- Check that servo harnesses, board cables, and power connectors are firmly seated.
- Confirm the display, buttons, and serial cables are connected.
- If you use an external power source, verify it can supply enough current to avoid brown-outs or jitter on first boot.
Important: run the first session on a flat desk, and keep objects away from the arm until initialization finishes.
2. Power On and Initialize
- Connect power and confirm the device powers up.
- Wait for the screen to light up with the boot animation or status prompt.
- Keep the robot stable while the system initializes.
- On first boot, watch that the servos respond and the system does not reboot abnormally.
When everything is normal the arm enters its interactive state and the screen shows expression animations and status feedback.
3. Bluetooth Provisioning
RIG-Arm supports device discovery and provisioning over Bluetooth:
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone.
- Open the mini app: scan the QR code on screen with WeChat to launch the Xiao Lu (小陆同学) mini app.
- Add device: tap Add Device; the app discovers the Bluetooth signal named
RIG-Arm-XXXX. - Enter Wi-Fi: select a 2.4 GHz network and enter the password. On success the screen shows a connected animation and the device goes online.
Device names start with RIG-Arm followed by a suffix so you can tell multiple robots apart.
4. Basic Interaction
After provisioning, try the basic interactions:
- Watch the expression animations and status feedback on screen.
- Test basic actions, return-to-center, waving, and stop.
- For development, follow the serial log and control status output.
Voice wake-up: say the wake word "小陆同学" (Xiao Lu Tong Xue) and the arm responds immediately with a matching expression.
Voice commands (can be triggered directly by voice):
- Basic actions: nod, shake head.
- Emotion: happy.
- Lifelike poses: swing front-back / left-right, waist twist with big steps.
- Calibration: enter/exit calibration mode - use this after joint offsets appear or after disassembly.
Start with simple actions and confirm servo control and display feedback work before combining more complex motions.
Troubleshooting
Symptom | Checks |
Device does not power on | Check the power cable connections. Verify supply voltage and current are sufficient. Check for loose connectors between the control board and power input. |
Screen does not respond | Confirm the device has finished booting. Check the display FPC/ribbon and SPI wiring. Confirm the firmware has been flashed correctly. |
Device cannot be discovered | Confirm Bluetooth is on. Confirm the device is not already connected to another phone. If the device rebooted several times, wait a few seconds and retry. |
Servos do not respond | Check the servo power supply. Confirm the serial/control wiring. Verify basic actions work first, then debug more complex control logic. |
